Agree with all previous comments--a real jewel. Only thing we can add is that we (humans and dog) loved the trails and the 3-sided shelters. Practically had the place to ourselves off-season. Camp host did come to greet us and alert us to the "camp kitty," which we were glad to have a heads up about given our cat-hating dog.

Another great NM state park. We stayed in Desert Cove with electric and water, but there are sites for every kind of camper. Beautiful views of the lake and nice loop trail for exercise. We liked the recycling program, but the camp hosts didn't do anything to enforce quiet hours. Family next to us left their untrained dog tied up outside all night. (Note that we saw a fox hunting a rabbit and a pack of coyotes in the campground!)

Lovely campground in the fall, with the gorgeous old cottonwoods turning yellow. The sites are all pull-throughs, though, which we don't like. It feels like we are all parked right on the road. But restrooms are well-cared for, there's recycling, and of course, lots of birds to watch and listen to.

We stayed off season for free--one loop is left open--in what might be the prettiest spot we've ever camped in, site #1. The view of Pedernal and the lake just filled our windows, and we had the whole place to ourselves. Well, there was the one coyote who kept getting into our trash at night.... Be sure to dump and fill yourself with fresh water before arriving in off-season. No water, dump, electric, bathrooms or patrols in off season, but very, very pretty place. We stayed here, instead of Ghost Ranch, because dogs aren't welcome at the Ghost Ranch CG (plus the roads and sites at Ghost Ranch are horrible). We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Fabulous destination: hot springs, spa, restaurant, wine bar. Terrible RV park. We decided it was worth the $20; very rough roads, and lots of untrimmed trees to enjoy the renovated spa facilities and the rare treat of an on-site wine bar. Without the spa facilities, this place would merit a 1 or 2: terrible roads, very few decent sites, no restrooms/showers/laundry. Just a weedy dump station; electric (only three 50 amps, if that's what you need), and water hookups. But who cares after a soak in the hot springs and a massage? Sites 1 and 23-27 are the popular ones. Stop by office to get a map and pick out your own site first before paying. Note the new rate (which their web site does not yet reflect): you pay $20 for RV site + $24 per day for access to springs. Old rate was $30 for RV site, which included 50% reduction in hot springs fee.

This is a no reservations campground 17 miles north of Abuiqui (10 miles north of Ghost Ranch) on US 84. It is an "iron ranger" set up. We camped here off season , so restrooms and water pumps were turned off. (No sign was posted to this effect, however.) Campground was monitored by a US Forest Service employee, who came round to empty the iron ranger in the morning. Very pretty, unusual setting and nice walk up to the amphitheater itself, which really does echo. After about 7PM, traffic noise from US 84 died down and it was very quiet at night. Beware very unlevel sites, though. Nearby Abuiqui Dam is a much nicer, developed campground, but this is nice in its own way. We heard from locals that dispersed camping in the Carson National Forest (just south on US 84, turn right at the monastery sign) is very nice, too.

Great location and, since we stayed in October, the leafy cottonwood trees were just gorgeously golden. Some bathrooms were closed for winter already, but there were some facilities, which we didn't use. Tight spots, but worth it after a day of touring the canyon.

Great location. It's always a treat to be able to walk to restaurants and activities from the campground. The Colorado Welcome Center--and a very nice park--are across the street. We used that park for dog exercise, as the campground itself is pretty much all gravel and not very dog-friendly. Very nice restroom/shower/laundry facilities and very nice staff. Follow the recommendations of others and get a spot on the west side (we didn't and we had traffic noise at night). Overall, a pleasant spot to spend a few days. (This area merits more than the 3 days we gave it, but we headed south to miss a big--and early--snowstorm!)

We aren't big KOA fans, but had to stay one night here for two reasons: 1) a friend was going to pick us up and take us to The Range in Bernalillo for dinner (don't miss that place) and 2) the reviews about the breakfasts were intriguing (and, it turns out, accurate). The free pancakes are actually some of the best we've ever had, but that breakfast burrito, with green Chile? Terrific. We made another meal out of it later, it was so big. Off season, park wasn't crowded. Dog run was adequate. Owners are very hands on and their pride in their property shows everywhere. Very friendly staff. When in area again, we might stay here (if it's not expected to rain).

We checked out several Albuquerque-area campgrounds, based on the reviews on this site, and--no surprise--the reviews on this site were right again! American RV Park is just great: friendly staff, very nice facilities (laundry, showers, hot tub, store), but the reason we stayed here? Rain was expected and this was the only CG with paved sites not dirt (mud). Plus, the dog run area was crucial, since we'd been subjecting the poor dog to lots of desert/rocky campgrounds of late. The only downside is I-40 traffic noise. We stayed in the first row of sites behind the main buildings (which front the freeway). Good proximity to facilities on rainy days but those trucks run 24 hours/day.

Beautiful park. Huge sites. Try for a site at the beginning or end of the loop--there is some road noise toward the back of the loop. All those diesel trucks pulling their OHVs, you know. But that's minor. Found the park to be very clean and well-kept. Can't beat the price, either. Walking trails on the dunes (with interpretive plaques) very nice. Nice picnic tables and fire rings. Great place for a dog, too.

Pros: New building to house office, store, indoor pool. Easy access to Walmart, highways. Good laundry facility. Price is certainly right. Cons: Extremely unattractive CG. Nowhere for dogs. Full of loud party people--on a Wednesday night in October, of all times. Extremely unlevel sites. Used up all our blocks and still we're off 2%+. Glad we get to take off this morning.

Gorgeous location, nicely designed sites, and hookups (which were necessary because we had hot temps AND wind, which necessitated the A/C). $24 for hookups; $14 for dry camping; the $6 park entrance fee can be subtracted. We stopped at noon to check it out (we were on our way to Utah), but we had to stop and camp here--beautiful!

Very nice for an overnight stay: convenient to CA 58 (we're always leaving the state over Tehachapi) but also not much traffic noise. Not scenic surroundings (industrial), but very tidy, new park with decent space between sites, which is rare in a new commercial park. Bathroom facilities outstanding. We preferred this park to the Orange Grove park in Bakersfield for our over nighting needs. (Extra $2 per night charge for a dog; not great facilities for dogs, though.)

Our second time visiting Tecopa Hot Springs (the first time we stayed at Delight's). We chose this place because Pastel's Bistro--a destination restaurant if ever there were one--is on the property. It's fabulous. Other pluses: they have their own labyrinth to walk and the views from the spaces up the hill are quite nice. The bathhouse for the hot springs isn't very good, though. Showers are separate from the small soaking tubs, so bring a cover up. Both tubs are fully enclosed. (Delight's are larger and one opens up to the stars.) Very nice management, though. We would stay again if soaking isn't our priority.

There are two campgrounds: Canyon View (very rutted roads, gravel sites, pit toilets, killer views) and Sunset (paved sites, flush toilets). This review is of Sunset, which is quite close to the very nice Visitor Center and the trails. We loved this free--and quite nice--campground much more than most fee-based campgrounds. Roomy, shaded sites with picnic tables and grills. Very nice bathroom with flush toilets and hot running water (no showers). Just a gorgeous park. We have a 25' Class C and fit perfectly, but there was a Class A with a toad that sort of fit. In high season, I wouldn't try to come here in a long RV, but off season, it worked.

In our spot (#168), very quiet (far enough away from 101) and great TV reception. Concrete pad was unlevel, though (4 degrees off), and this park is very full (neighbors quite close) because all the others in the area are crappy. We were just over nighting and found the park to be nice, with especially great night registration. Dog walk was disappointing, though--just a rough, weedy field. Can't feature this as a resort destination, though.

I am submitting this in order to correct the Web site link. The last review linked to a terribly old and inaccurate Yelp.com review, not to the campground's web site. I fixed that but DID NOT stay here. (I had to put in an overall rating, so I chose a neutral number, 6.) Changes were made by admin.

We camped here in order to attend an evening concert at the Kentucky Mine, which is 7 miles away. Worked perfectly for that purpose--this stretch of 49 is a good road to travel at night. However, the campground has seen much better days. Sites are not level and are very small, but our RV is smallish and we got our 1 slide out. There is fresh drinking water, but it is not possible to fill RV tanks with it. Too bad we were counting on that.... Very good camp hosts. There is a hiking trail within the park, along the creek--not well-maintained (wear your boots!) but pretty. Note that fee of $19 does not include $9 reservation fee through recreation.gov (ouch!) or additional tax. Fee is awfully high for pretty primitive camping.

We agree with others: very pretty park, with all that moss dripping down. We were there mid-week and shared the park with only 2 other campers. We enjoyed watching the boats on the reservoir, but it gets pretty buggy (of course). We'd stay here again if in the area.

We didn't have anyone next to us (mid-week overnighting), so we didn't feel the crowded site plans. And yes, there were park models and permanent residents, but things were MUCH nicer and more well-maintained than similar parks we've accidentally stumbled into (we are state park fans, but there weren't any in this area). We found the park to be quite nice--friendly staff, very clean bathrooms, nice dog walk area, meticulously maintained grounds, and very quiet, after the children went to bed ;-) Lots to do here, if one wants to avail oneself of it--we were just overnighting and aren't Wallydockers. Nice spot.

Low rating due to the fact that we're not Disney people (we were there to see friends), plus exhorbitant cost for what you get: cheek-to-jowl parking, way too many people per site, lots of noise, swarms of mosquitoes (and a prohibition against "burning devices" so no Citronella candles for us), very tame squirrels which tormented our dog so that we had to keep him inside, and rules, rules, rules. The sites were level and we did enjoy the very convenient and extensive recycling and the very clean restrooms. Just can't justify the $100 per night. Can't. And then they charge $ for the ice, even though they make all these claims that campsites are just like resort rooms at the hotels, where, I think, the ice is free. I'm sure if you have children and are there to see the theme parks, you'll love it. But as a camping experience, ick.

Totally agree with the other reviews: it's a little gem. Our criteria for "gem" is whether we can sit outside (shade, grass, space between sites) comfortably and exercise our dog easily. Love the tall pine trees and enormous spaces (and empty sites) in this park AND the $18 fee. However, if you want clean, tidy bathroom facilities, this is not your place. That's why we appreciate having our own if the CG's facilities aren't up to snuff. But lovely natural setting--very state-park-like.

Agree with the May and March 2009 posts--awesome park, friendly people. A real gem. We loved our early AM walks through the loop and all the history. (This time of year, 6:30AM is the only bearable temperature time of the day!) A great value for $20, with all of the sites to see. The only reason we gave it a 9 is that there isn't much privacy (i.e., no trees or bushes) between sites. We parked in site 1, so we had one side to ourselves, and the park wasn't very full, so it all worked out well. Excellent base for exploring the area. Don't miss Port Gibson's Church Street, the Old Country Store in Lorman for fried chicken, and of course Natchez and the Trace.

A beautiful park for smaller campers. Our camper is 25' long, and it fit lengthwise into the gorgeous, private sites. We barely fit with our slide room and steps out, though, but the squeeze was worth it. Cool nights in Nevada (and beautiful stars), very pretty lake, private sites with table, and fire ring. We are now convinced that US 50 is THE way to cross Nevada (rather than dull old 80 to the north) and we will definitely stay here again.

Not sure what bees were in the bonnets of the previous posters, but we found this to be a perfectly serviceable campground. We had wanted to stay at the Green River State Park (which is visible from Shady Acres) because we are state park people, but with no hookups and 103 degree temps, we opted for electric hookups. Shady Acres is between the state park and the KOA, so you can easily compare the 3. We liked the trees here, the enormous campground itself--very spacious. Our site was concrete (some are just gravel) and was level enough. Wifi worked GREAT, but we couldn't get cable TV to work. Folks at front very professional. Grass for the dog all over the place. You get coupons upon check in for the adjacent RV wash, fuel, and c-store, which is nice. We'll take 3 cents off a gallon of diesel, thank you very much. Restrooms, while old, were very clean. I'd stay here again on an overnight stop.

It is a serviceable campground, especially since park was pretty empty so no close neighbors. It is a convenient location off I-90 and near attractions. We were tired and needed to do laundry, so this was OK. The sites are not too level; bathroom and laundry facilities ancient and not too clean. The folks at front desk (owners?) very friendly. There's a cafe (we didn't try) and a store (modest supplies). We wouldn't stay again, though.

Even tho sites are electric only and there are no restrooms or showers, we give this park an 8 for price-is-right + lovely setting: I'm sitting here watching the golfers and fishermen and the trails are great. Grassy, level sites. And not crowded, either. Only a short distance away from our 7:45 AM (yikes) RV service appointment, too.

Our second time at this park, and we echo the other recent reviews: nice site size for a commercial CG, nice shade, not lots of permanents, easy access to lots of things. Mixed reviews on the showers/laundry. Laundry OK (lots of machines), showers OK (great water pressure), but not the cleanest of restrooms. The park did flood when we were there (20" of rain in 2 weeks!) and the staff was very accommodating in moving us to another site for the remainder of our week when our site flooded completely. We will stay again since this is a good park and close to my elderly parents just 5 miles away.

Very pretty state park with convenient (only 4 miles) access to I-90. We also wished we had more time here--the trails looked very nice. We also appreciated the clean (and pretty new) showerhouse and recycling program.

Well-kept state park. We arrived shortly after a major thunderstorm and the ranger was driving around picking up fallen branches. Camp hosts are very competent and friendly. We picked a site with lots of trees and shade and not close to neighbors (65) and were glad we weren't in the main loop--very close quarters there. Showerhouse is at one end of the CG--check the map if proximity is important to you. We were a bit of a walk away, but that's OK. Because of the rains, park was pretty buggy. Forewarned is forearmed. Fee of $19 reflects electric site, in high season, but you have to also add on the irksome $8.50 "reservation fee."
06/2009

Lovely reservoir (but you can't go in--only dirty boats and jet skis can). Some very nice sites with electric hookups, but those are reservation only, even if they sit empty all night. If you are without reservations or aren't fully self-contained (no showers here either), don't go here. Unlevel, grassy "sites" (they really aren't proper sites) without any amenities. Oh, well, maybe a fire ring buried under weeds and a rickety, off-level picnic table. No signage (except for the "Reservation Only!") signs. We wandered around the VERY rutted roads and ended up just taking what looked to be a group picnic table spot right on the water. (There wasn't a sign saying we couldn't.) We then watched a guy with a pop-up camper spend the better part of an hour wandering around till he took the site we had determined was almost 10% off level. Then he spent quite some time leveling. This could be just a beautiful park if they improved the roads, sites, and signage. I'd give it a 5 except I give it bonus points for the site we snagged.
06/2009
rating [ 4/10 ]
Um, an "adventure." Roads into/out of here are really awful, especially in a rainstorm. Sites are bare ground--no gravel, no pavement. Staff was friendly enough, but we didn't receive any printed campground info, so we don't know what all is available and it's pouring and sort of scary outside, so we're not exploring much. The plus side is that it's less than 1/2 mile from where we're getting service on our Sprinter chassis at the nearby Dodge dealership in the morning. That's why we're here. We're planning to leave in the morning by the entrance, since the exit road looked impassable to us. (Pickup trucks could do it, but not our little Class C--too many ruts!) It is pretty quiet here, except for the mosquitoes buzzing.

Third time we've stayed here and we will be back, since Kingman is a full day's drive from home for us andthis is a good first or last night out. Sparkling clean restroom/showers, friendly (and well-stocked) office, easy-peasy overnight right off I-40 The Canine Corrals at this place are great!

Well, we didn't have the same great experience that others had. It's an OK place; glad we were just overnighting and appreciated the prompt email responses we got before we got there. First, we got assigned to the wrong spot. Got that corrected, but we had asked to be close to some grass for our dog and we ended up in gravel sandwiched between big rigs. Took forever to get change for the laundry machines, as the gal at front counter couldn't remember how to open the register. Since I had to go back a second time (all the dryers were $1.25, except for one, which was $1.05!!), she got faster getting me some nickels. Machines functioned pretty poorly and that was our main reason for staying at a commercial CG--to do laundry. A plunger sat right on the bathroom counter...ick. Hightailed it out of there first thing in the morning.

Serviceable. Pros: close to I-40 without freeway noise. Inexpensive ($20.60 with discount). Quiet neighbors, which was good because we were jammed in like sardines. Cons: Terrible "pet exercise area" (a torn up ditch filled with cactus). No groundskeeping (overgrown with foxtails--again, not good for dogs). Pool was drained. Everything rather dreary. Horrible road condition. But, as they say, all parks look alike when you pull the curtains at night.

Old park, with poorly maintained grounds and roads. We stopped here because of the promise of fenced dog runs (which were really tiny). Helpful front office folks drive you to your site. We were happy to have a little grass alongside the site (well, the dog was happy), but feel that $33 (before Good Sam discount) is a lot. There is an indoor pool with hottub, which we didn't use. That may explain the price. Weather was poor, so we opted not to find a state park, but that might've been a smarter move....

A nice park with clean restrooms, private sites, and nice hiking trails. It is an odd location (call to get directions if you're coming from the north; there are only signs from the south!), but once you're in the park, you forget that it's surrounded by a neighborhood.

We were looking for an overnight spot with clean laundry, after a long stretch of state park camping. This worked. Not as much shade as we had hoped (our site had none) and site was not level, but hookups and laundry worked. Laundry was only $1/load, but laundry room sure needed cleaning. We had really hoped to try the on site restaurant, but it's closed for dinner Sunday nights (and all of Monday). Lots of rather messy-looking permanents, so the place isn't scenic. If the park had been full, we would've rated it much lower as sites seem pretty close together. But, as is, when pretty empty, it worked fine for an overnight.

Note: $17 per night PLUS $3 per person day use fee. We snagged a spot on the busy holiday weekend just for an overnighter, so we didn't get one of the premium sites that others have mentioned. We were in Area 1--NOT recommended. Road and sites are crumbling, unlevel asphalt. Had to really work on getting somewhat level--we were more than 5 degrees off front/back AND side to side. Trails are unmarked (at least in our area) and in disrepair--there appears to have been a forest fire at some point. We are big state park fans, so this was a bit disappointing, but it's still in our opinion better than being sardines in a private campground.

We ignored the "1" review (rant?) and went with the two "10" reviews, and we were happy. This place is funky, but pretty well-maintained. Grass is mowed, sites are large and level, pool is clean, dog run was large and right next to a pasture full of beautiful horses and their foals. A nice treat. Gal who greeted us couldn't have been friendlier and the price can't be beat. We did a bunch of laundry, and it worked OK--machines aren't sparkling by any stretch but they did the job and were on the honor system so no worries about quarters. There are lots of folks living here, but we found it to be a very quiet and enjoyable park a bit off the beaten path. Don't know if there were showers/laundry. Oddly enough, we weren't given any instructions or papers or even a receipt (we paid online) upon check in. The only concern I'd have is if it rained a lot--you have to drive over grass to get on and off the concrete pad.

Great park. It'd be a 10 if reservations were possible and AT&T coverage were better (neither phone nor Internet strong enough). We arrived at 3:45 on a gorgeous Saturday spring afternoon and lucked out. Ranger said park was 75% full (although it looked more like 90% full as we drove around) and we snared a very nice spot. Tons of room all around; great picnic table, patio and firepit; full hookups! Park was built in 1994, so it's in really great shape. We found the ranger's directions + map + signs to be all we needed to easily navigate the park (and the brown state park signs--not GPS--perfectly adequate for getting us here ;-). Lovely spot. Just arrive as early as you can. We had a few backup parks in mind (NFS land or heading down the road to Springerville), but are very happy we could stay here. The other options in the immediate area certainly did not have this park's natural beauty or appeal.

This is a great state park, although I wish they had more professional office staff. The two young people made a mess out of our reservation and basically said it was up to me to kick someone out of our reserved site. Yikes. (These folks weren't rangers, probably just college students in summer jobs.) Other than that, it is a gorgeous setting with lots to do. It includes a camp store, boat rentals, and etc. Many sites have shade trees and are on the water. The place does get busy on the weekends; we were here Tues-Sun and sure like Tues-Thurs best. I liked the place so much that we bought a Texas State Park pass, even though we don't live in TX. We do come through here a lot, so we'll get the use out of it.

Gem of a park. New showerhouse--clean and functional. Fresh water and convenient dump station. There's even a washer and dryer (cold water only)--50 cents a load! Nice nature trails lead to the lake. Very friendly camp hosts. Lovely trees and very quiet, as their web site advertises. So much nicer than most private campgrounds.

Nice enough county park--newish, so the trees are young and there's not much shade. Sites very "exposed" and open. Convenient location to access Independence and KC, which is good because there's not much to do here by way of trails, etc. County's web site is a true "experience"--very painful and inefficient, but it did work. The very nice camp host had our reservation all ready for us. Beware: Don't put the address that's printed on both the reservation and campground map into your GPS. We wasted many miles and about an hour chasing that address. Take I-470 and Bowlin Exit to get here.

Great park! We dry camped there 4 nights at the $10 rate and while we were there the first batch of full hookup sites opened unofficially. The ranger said that the price for these, when officially opened, will be $24. We didn't move to take one of those, as they backed up to the busy road and our little dry camp backed up to the babbling creek. Much nicer sounds. Even after the improvements, this will still be a no reservations park, which is why we got there the Wed. before the 3-day holiday weekend and stayed! Excellent hiking trails and large grassy sites made our dog happy, and the peaceful, leafy green park with the water sounds made us happy. If this place offered showers, it'd be a 10, but the camp hosts sure do keep the bathrooms clean, given the heavy use by the tent campers.

Really nothing good to say about this park. It has such potential (it's huge and could be scenic), but it is in a state of decay/collapse. Internal roads are hideously potholed and steep--we thought we might tip over a few times. Sites are not even really "sites." Just poles to plug into and water connections without any pressure. There is a playground but all the other resort "amenities" (pool, snack bar, etc.) are just gross. Really. We didn't even want to use the dump station. We went there for a rally, and others who have been coming there for years said that it used to be much nicer.

Re: Price--note that there are several levels of discount: cash vs. credit, regular vs. club (Good Sam, AAA, etc.), on the river vs. not on the river. Our price reflects on the river w/ Good Sam discount. Not on the river w/ discount = $30. LOVELY place. Get spot #19 if you can. Very private, right on the river. Train whistles at night (we like that) and faint I-5 noise. (Sites away from the river are closer to the interstate.) Very clean facilities and nice folks. It would get a 10 if there were more to do there, but it's a lovely spot.

Ridiculously expensive ($46 off season full hookups and not even in a destination area), but as my mother would say, "A port in a storm." We had been driving too long, had no reservation, and needed water and dumping, so the state park we had been headed for was out as it didn't have either. We, too, checked out Creekside RV and were grateful it said "No vacancy." Creepy. We settled at KOA because we were just too beat to drive further. Indifferent-bordering-on-rude staff. Given a site smack dab next to somebody else, even though the park was 75% empty. But, our German shepherd LOVED the doggy play area with its obstacle course. If you have children, this would be a great place to stay. As an overnight spot, too pricey, but we were glad for the safe, clean spot at 6 P.M.

Either the owners have changed or had a change of heart, but we didn't see what others (including AAA) saw here. Run down, rule crazy, and just plain sad. You can see from our other reviews that we're generally positive, but this place stinks. The worst part? All of the NO THIS, NO THAT rules everywhere, including NO REFUNDS, which I noticed after signing the credit card slip and then getting the CG map. Got to our site, turned the map over and saw the rules: No large dogs allowed. We told them on the phone and upon check in that we had a dog. No one asked the breed or size. We sort of crouched in fear all night hoping that we wouldn't be evicted (NO REFUNDS!) because we have a 75 pound dog. Argh. And the "pet walks" here are pathetic little bushes for the dogs to pee on. (NO POTTYING ANYWHERE ELSE! say the rules.) Geesh. Unless you're a serious ATV-er, find a nice state park around here. We wish we had. We were afraid of not having a reservation on a Saturday night. We shouldn't have been. We have drawn the shades and are awaiting morning when we can make a break for another state park. (And the Wi-Fi is indeed spotty, but working miraculously right now....)

A beautiful location right next to the beach. Excellent camp hosts: friendly and armed with good dog treats! They even drive a little cart around to sell you firewood--how convenient! It turned out to be too windy for us to enjoy having one, but handy service. This would be a great place to spend some time, given the proximity of the beach and the great little towns in the area. We picked up some of the freshest fish ever at Ecola Market in Cannon Beach (don't miss this) to have at our campsite. Perfection!

Outstanding park. Agree with all previous postings (large sites, great trails, friendly hosts, well-run campground). Will add these notes: firewood available for sale ($5), outstanding showers and bathrooms, intriguing cabins (if you had friends or family to join you), and recycling (hooray!). We were heading for the private CAMP Blanco RV Park, based on reviews on this site, but came across this state park first. Once we checked it out, we knew that no private CG could compete. A jewel if you like space and natural beauty. Would've been a 10 if the dump facilities had been open.

A nice park for an overnight. It was our second choice (Champoeg State Park was full), so we started out being disappointed by having to go here, but we were pleasantly surprised. We got a back-in site on the river, with plenty of grass for our dog (and we didn't see any dog feces, contrary to Sept. 08 post). Sites are close together, but OK for an overnight.

Far enough away from Interstate 5 to be quiet and close enough to unique nature (waterfalls and a swimming hole!) to be unique. Sites are not, however, far enough apart or private enough to merit the 9-10 score, even though the bathrooms and shower facilities just sparkle. Gotta have some bushes and yards in between sites to get the high scores ;-). But beautiful place. Store open 8AM-9PM--such hours. And the folks running the place are very competent and friendly. Can't beat the price ($27 w/ Good Sam discount).

We are used to dry camping in state parks, so it felt like a real luxury to have water and electric. But the real bonus was our site (#12)--eastward view of the lake, so we got to see the sun rise over it. A little path from our campsite led us right to the lake. Sites are well separated by foliage and space, so we felt as if we had the park to ourselves (which we did, camping mid-week in early spring). Park management was pretty disorganized, but we got our reservation squared away eventually. The Park also offers recycling.

The novelty factor here is great--how often does one get to sleep with the perfume of orange blossoms wafting in one's RV windows? However, the easy access from Hwy 58 = road noise, and I had a picture of more trees separating and shading the sites. Sites are pretty darn close together and many trees are tiny. Certainly not a 4-paws up dog campground--just some area on the perimeter, in the dirt, with trash cans. No bags, no grass. Why is it that campgroundss have a "no dogs on the grass" policy? I get it when the off-limits grass is by the people facilities, but why can't they plant some grass for the dogs? I'm just sayin'. It makes a difference. There are big facility for groups here; lots of retirees and Class As, which is fine, but not our cup o' tea. We are partial to campgrounds with lots of kinds of people and vehicles.

Right next to US 395, so you get traffic noise (our site was right smack dab next to road). Sites were nicely spaced and there were pretty trees. Dog walk wasn’t workable—there was a boulder wall and pine trees planted next to the wall and you and your canine were to walk between the two but there was only about 6 inches. Very puzzling. Nicely well-stocked store and lots of facilities for children—petting zoo of sorts, playground, pool. Coffee and muffins 7-9AM were included. Bathrooms were nice.

What an oasis in the middle of the desert! In the middle of a 45mph dust storm, we pulled off the road at noon (noon!) to stop for the day. Just too much wind to keep fighting. Found this gorgeously landscaped, green oasis with tons of birds and didn’t want to leave. Stayed our full 24 hours. Paddeboats and kayaks are provided for use on the large lake. Great walking path around the lake (the dog loved the grass after the barrenness of Death Valley!). There’s also a beach area and swimming pool. Lots of friendly security people, a store, gas station with diesel, restaurant and small casino to walk to. And a bargain to boot, for such a nice place. Can't think of one thing to improve--sites were even spaced nicely, with grass in between.

The campground of last resort in Death Valley—basically just a parking lot with some dumpsters and a few restrooms with flush toilets. It worked just fine for one night (the stars were awesome), but we had planned on staying two. Couldn’t do it. Lots of generators running (allowed 7AM to 9PM), but surprisingly kind of fun. Great location close to Golden Canyon and Badwater and Zabriskie Point.

We were just looking for an overnight, and that’s pretty much what we got. Sites are tight together, not much in the way of landscaping. Looks like a lot of long-termers. Facilities were old but clean. A strip of grass with a bag dispenser was provided for dogs, but this is not a doggie nirvana.

A real gem of a park. Large sites, well-shaded, almost all with views of mountains and the lake. Can hear some US 395 noise, but it’s not bad. There were some flush toilets (some pit), convenient trash and recycling , picnic tables galore—some right on the edge of the water. Very pretty spot and a good deal. No hookups, no showers, but clean flush (and some pit) toilets, dump station, and fresh water were available.

What a funky, yet delicious, place. For $33, you get full hookups, desert views, serenades by the frogs in the lake (which, after very silent Death Valley, is a song to be savored), level sites, and 24/7 access to 100-104 degree private hot springs baths. You are allowed 30 minutes each time, but can go whenever. Some rooms are open to the sky, and the night sky is spectacular here. (Star parties at nearby Pastels Bistro--which you MUST go to--are held around new moons.) And how many campgrounds do you go to that have on-site massage as well as luxurious robes for sale in the office? Facilities are a bit worn, but still *delightful*. Dogs won't be too happy here--lots of gravel and mineral y ground--but they'll get over it and you won't mind after soaking in those yummy mineral baths.

For our purposes, the location was perfect (we needed to get to the Capitol and we could do so on surface road not nearby freeway). We camped here during major winter storms (rain, hail), so it wasn't terribly pleasant. Practically empty, but we had to be next to a decrepit camper that had to be jump started frequently and who had to run the genny all the time. Ick. Noisy. Also a lot of freeway noise. Convenient to downtown, safe, and clean, but not a resort site so pretty overpriced for what you get. Wifi works fine. Staff is nice. Just not what anyone would call scenic.

Beautiful sites--spaced far apart, lots of trees. Every site has a picnic table, fire pit, and storage cupboard. All are close to trash, recycling (yay!), and fresh water pump, as well as nice, clean bathrooms with hot showers. We stayed off-season, so park was practically deserted. Gorgeous flora (and scary fauna--skunks are about, so beware!). Loved walking the area, but dogs are not allowed on dunes, which you have to cross to get to the beach. If you have a dog, you'll need to drive north to find a beach where Fido is welcome. But we found plenty of roads to walk with our dog. Lovely spot.

We were one of 4 other RVs in this large parking lot (off season!). Can't beat the location. Great to walk the dog to town to buy wine, cheese, etc. But if this park had been full, we would've pulled our hair out. It's just a parking lot with side-by-side sites. So, consider your purpose in staying here. Want to walk to town or participate in fairgrounds activities? This is your place. Eager for Napa scenery? Not here.

Easy access off I-40. Friendly front office folks. Neat "decor" (vintage cars/trailers as decoration). Bathrooms rather old and site wasn't very level. We were just over nighting and we'd do so again because of easy proximity to interstate AND to Freightliner service place down the street.

This is a serviceable overnight stop off of I-10. I sure wouldn't want to stay any longer. It is just a lot with no trees or any other natural interest, filled with RVs (lots of full timers in various states).

This was our first night out, and we were just looking for a serviceable place but found a gem! Our German Shepherd LOVED the "canine corrals"--nice, big, fenced, and lit dog runs that even had toys in them to chase. We visited 3 times in our very short overnight stay. The new-ish shower/bathroom combo rooms were just fabulous. Meticulously clean and laid out thoughtfully. The showers were great. There were nice folks when we checked in, too. This is a great overnight stop on I-40. We're thinking of stopping again on our way back home. (Please note that the nightly rate I noted is an estimate. Can't find receipt....)

The relatively new owners (3 years) have made lots of improvements, from what we've heard. Hookups and concrete pad at site were all in good order. We loved the blooming oleander bushes that separated each RV site--nice privacy as well as the beautiful palm trees that lined the street side--lit up in the evenings. Nice for a stroll. We stayed overnight (on Thanksgiving day no less) and were invited to the resort's feast, no need to bring anything. We had a ball with the mostly snowbird crowd (there were a few other overnighters) in the Route 66 decorated clubhouse. We were sorry we weren't staying longer as they announced a trip for Monday after Thanksgiving to drive to the bottom of the Grand Canyon--sounds like lots of organized activities for the snowbirds. Very nice folks. There are not very many amenities at the resort itself (tiny pool), but organized activities, proximity to Laughlin, Vegas, and other attractions. While we've stayed at technically nicer (read: fancier) places, I give this high marks for friendliness, cleanliness, and overall welcoming atmosphere.

This is a great place! There are huge, private pull-through sites with laundry lines (for swimsuits and beach towels) and fire pit and picnic table. There is a lovely shower/restroom facility (skylights over the shower). They recycle plastic and glass and cans! (We are Californians and have visited 20 states this year, and find the lack of widespread recycling facilities appalling! Such an easy thing to do.) There were very friendly camp hosts and other guests. There is a great nature walk and beautiful beach. It is easy access to US Highway 98 and the Emerald Coast sites. There is a Super Wal-Mart across the street. Only drawback: Proximity to US Highway 98 = traffic noise and proximity to 3 air force bases = jet noise. But surprisingly, the noise didn't bother us, since the rest of the benefits were so good.

Wowee. From the concierge to the complimentary breakfast and newspaper, we felt as if we were staying in a hotel. Gravel sites are perfectly groomed (which does feel a little weird; we are, after all, state park campground fans) and the staff is most helpful. We were just overnighting, but lots of folks here for the winter. This would be a great place for a group. Outdoor fireplace/seating area. Nicest laundry (combo library) facility I've ever seen. Shower rooms were pristine.

Very pretty lake. Too cold for us to use the bathhouse (not heated) and the water pump froze overnight, but it thawed out quickly come sunrise. We enjoyed the remoteness and unique beauty of the place. Great CG host, as well. Can really see the appeal of this place when it's warm enough to swim--nice lake and beach and facilities.

I'm rating this a 6 only based on a very short overnight stay (arrived in the dark, left in the dark, given the time of year and the fact that we needed to cover miles on this trip). I'm sure the resort amenities are very nice; we didn't use 'em. The people were very nice at check-in, the sites were spaced nicely, lots of room to walk dog. But bathrooms/showers were old and in need of attention on the mold front. If in this area, we had been told to stay at the Tyler State Park just down the road, but we had a snafu and didn't arrive in time to get a spot. (But we did look around and it looks like a great state park.)

This place has a beautiful setting, as others have noticed. There are good hookups and trash receptacles. There is noticeable security (which was probably needed as this looks to be a major party campground, with its large pavilion that had a big party the Fri. night we were there, despite the 30 degree temps). The showers/restrooms, while clean, were old, prompting my partner to encourage me to use the RV shower. Try to get a spot closer to the lake (and farther away from the LA-70 road noise).

Pros: It is a convenient location for outlet shopping and access to I-95. There are nice sites--shade trees and enough space between vehicles. Cons: We were there 5 days and every morning I never saw another soul in the restrooms/showers. This might explain why the restrooms/showers were not cleaned even once while we were there. The sand just keep accumulating on the floor, and someone's broken soap bar just stayed under the sink the whole time. which was kind of disconcerting. I like those places where the restrooms are closed daily for cleaning. It at least gives you the illusion of cleanliness. Another con: The lady who checked us in was very nice, but the fellow in the wheelchair who works there (and I only know he works there from reading these reviews) sort of "accosted" us on our THIRD evening there as we parked. He did not identify himself, even after I kept saying, "Hello! Hello?" He just shone a flashlight in my face and asked if we had been here before. Well, I had no idea (at the time) who this person was so I spoke generally, and he just wheeled away. No "thank you." No "I'm sorry to bother you, but I made a mistake." Nothing. He was very rude which left a bad taste in our mouths. But our dog did like the grounds, and the location served our purpose well. It was kind of expensive, though, for no real amenities (Wi-Fi was a separate charge).

These are the friendliest folks working here that I've ever met. They were very kind and helpful. The showers and laundry facility were fabulously clean (and new). There were level concrete sites. My only "dings": lots of early-rising, diesel-driving workers must live here (6AM departures). It was hard to find trash receptacle, and there was a fair amount of road noise. But great overnight stop. I felt very welcomed, and everything was just pristine.

A very weird (but perfectly serviceable) campground. We read reviews on this Web site from 2007--Wild Country was new then, bathhouse being built, plans for exotic animals to entertain kids, etc. Well, I think someone's dream is a bit deferred. The bathhouse, a year later, is still in framing stage (two windows are in but just 2x4 studs for the rest of it). Grass growing up in the gravel for the sites. There were only a handful of us here. We met the owner and paid him our $23 in cash (which seems like a lot when there's not a bathhouse, but we're in the middle of nowhere and are tired, so). We wish Wild Country RV Park well. It served us quite nicely--no neighbors, lots of room to exercise the dog, and only 1/2 mile off the highway. It was easy to get an early start and hit the highway. It is a bit creepy in the dark of night when the wind howls and there is no on-site owner/attendant. (One review noted the "lovely cooling breeze." well, in November, it's a cold, howling wind!)

First, let me say that we are in a Class B RV. This is a park for big rigs and long-term living units (the kind with wooden panels built below--not mobile). The good things: very convenient location off I-80 and Donner Pass Road. Can get to everything easily using freeway or local road. I didn't find the highway noise bothersome--more like white noise in the background. Lovely shade trees--really feel as if you're in the north woods. Excellent laundry facility (as one would expect with all the long-term folks). Nice front ofice staff. Great wifi (which I'm using now to write this). The negatives: Quiet hours till 8AM--kind of late (we're early risers). Only one women's toilet and shower. We did experience a wait. And while it was marginally clean, it needs maintenance (water under the floor tiles, poor shower head, no storage for shampoo et al in shower) and a rubber mat in the shower area. Bigger problem for us is the dirt around the sites--no grass or gravel even. The dirt blows everywhere. The dog sits in dirt. Dirt covers your hands and feet. No way to avoid it. And finally--not much to do here. No where to walk, really, and no pool.

Gorgeous sites, lots of room between campers, great dog-friendly trails, lovely summer temps (hot in day, cool at night), beautiful scenery. Wish there were water hookups, but that wasn't critical. Negatives: showers/flush toilets weren't working in the central camper services building (water main break), the dump site was missing its hose. Made rinsing a little tough. Other negative: trash cans were a DRIVE away from campsite. Tough to keep bear/other animal-proof because I'm not storing my dog's "business" in my camper at night! Other than those minor complaints, a gorgeous place to stay. Plus the 26-mile drive north from Steamboat Springs has been the favorite 2-lane scenic drive of our so-far 6000-mile trip.

Very, very clean restrooms. Awesome showers AND a separate room/sink for washing dishes, which was helpful as we had filled our Grey water tank and needed to wash dishes before pulling out to dump. Great sites, many shaded. We especially liked having a whole row for smaller vehicles, like our Class B, away from the monstrosity Class A's. (Even though a very inconsiderate Class A driver pulled his rig right in front of our picnic table at 7:30 AM as we were having breakfast and spewed his toxic diesel gases all over us without a thought. Just a reminder to all of you who drive these 4 mpg wonders.) Overall excellent facility--free Wi-Fi in the office, where very nice people worked. Negative: VERY VERY noisy in early morning from nearby gravel or some such facility. Loud semis. Also highway noise along the back row. But great location. Close to a Trader Joe's--great for provisioning.

A lovely place to stay. There were campers of all kinds--motorcyclists with tents, families with kids, Class As staying all summer, vintage Airstreams, and our little Class B. Nice (but crowded) showers and restrooms. Beautiful, spacious sites with lots of room. Sites were not, however, level. Very friendly staff; nice office and amenities offered (but office is a good walk from campsites). Lots of wonderful shade trees and sparky mica gravel. We stayed two nights and now that we're up the road in Spearfish wished we had stayed a third.

This is the first campground of our trip that I just hated. Thought we'd love staying in the park itself, but we were squeezed on 3 sides by enormous Class As with their slideouts hulking over our rig, and listening to them running their heaters. Way too cramped. Nowhere to sit outside (probably because of bears). Very noisy, too, with tons and tons of children (and the aforementioned running of equipment). Bathroom facilities were barebones and unpleasant. Showers cost $3.25 and were a long walk away. We didn't hook up water (a regulator was needed) or sewer (as another device was also needed) and got out of there before 7AM as we were so miserable.

Please note that I'm not recalling the nightly rate (didn't get a receipt from my Internet booking). First, the positives: Fabulous location! The tiered sites up the mountain allow for a lot of privacy. We shared a "tier" with 2 other motorhomes; would've been nice to know those folks, as we were kind of close. But everyone else was far away. Great amenities within walking distance, once you hook up your rig. Nice coffee shop with Wi-Fi (Estes Perk). Negatives: Initially, I thought it was positive that there was a private toilet/shower combination room. After I showered and dressed in the morning and opened the door to find an almost angry mob waiting, I realized the drawback. There were only 4 unisex toilet/shower rooms for all those campers at one level. (There was another set somewhere.) Not very efficient for processing the toilet users from the showerier. I felt sorry for the parents of young children.... Overall, we were happy to stay there for one night. Beautiful location. But we would not return for an extended stay. The whole shower/toilet shortage would get very old. Also, they are building a B&B facility--lots of construction noise starting pretty early.

There are nice, large sites with plenty of shade. There is some I-90 noise. The bathroom facility is small and coin-op. For $30/night, I'd like a shower included. The staff was helpful at check-in and offered to bring us leveling boards (sites are not level). There's lots and lots of nice grass--our dog loved that. Our big criteria is site size, so this is a winner on that score.

Lovely shaded pull-in sites that were very private. Sound of rushing river (Walla Walla River) was lovely to sleep through. Nice facility (kitchen with refridgerator) for family reunions, big gatherings. All types of campers were here--truck toppers, trailers, Class A, tents, and our Class B. Just a beautiful setting. No showers or dump station, though.
